AND PRODUCE
Commissioned and co-ordinated by West Cork LEADER
Co-op as a project for Cork City European Capital of Culture 2005,
John Minihan's intimate and informal portraits explore the theme
that West Cork's acclaimed food produce reflects the personality
of the individual as well as the influences of tradition and environment.
A selection of the portraits will be on continuous
display throughout the year of Cork's European Capital of Culture
at two venues, entry to which is free. The Farmgate Restaurant
will host the major part of the exhibition and is located in the
English Market, which is very much the heart of the City's vibrant
food culture. Ó Conaill Artisan Chocolatiers on French
Church Street will host a further selection in keeping with its
mission of bringing West Cork into the city.

THE WEST CORK GARDEN PARTY
The West Cork Garden Party held in the Glengarriff
Bamboo Park on Bank Holiday Sunday August 2nd once again proved
very successful with over 1,000 people in attendance and attracting
a great deal of media coverage. "For the isle formerly known
as emerald these are interesting times. After the Celtic Tiger
and Ireland's brief glory as a source of software production comes
the hour of the food island and its incarnation in the serrated
peninsulas and jagged promontories that make up the scenery of
the dazzling south-west. Witness a place apart, gourmet west Cork."
- Hadyn Shaughnessy of the Irish Times writes on the West Cork
Garden Party.
A number of food producers affiliated with the West
Cork Regional Branding Initiative displayed their extensive range
of locally produced products for purchase. Among these were West
Cork Natural Cheese, Ummera Smoked Products, Union Hall Smoked
Fish, Beara Preserves, Martin Carey's Butchers, O'Conaills Chocolates
and Padraigin's Gourmet Pizzas to name but a few.
Craft exhibitors were also well represented by Hillary
Hale, woodturner, Ruth O'Connell, stain glass, and Ann Murphy,
jeweler.
As visitors explored the gardens with its 30 different
species of bamboo and spectacular views, they enjoyed the song,
dance and traditional Irish music of the Owenabue Valley Traditional
Group, with some visitors even taking part in a dance or two.
Children were not forgotten as Mo the Clown entertained
a captive audience with plate turning, balloon modeling, juggling
and lots more.
This is the second year the Garden Party was held
following much persuasion by the many enthusiastic requests from
last year for a repeated
event and is a great way to showcase what the region has to offer,
bringing together its renowned food, crafts and traditional music
in a spectacular and unique setting. Click

"For the isle formerly known as emerald the
rebranding means there are several new words out there to describe
the progress to a gourmet Ireland. Not least among them; Fancy!"

abounds. He paid a special tribute to the work of West Cork LEADER

Darina Allen launches "A Taste of West Cork" Culinary
Guide
Guaranteed to wet the appetite of every chef and
food or tourism provider in the region is "A
Taste of West Cork", a superb culinary guide which was
officially launched at the 2004 Food & Wine Fair in Carrigaline
on Monday 19th April by Darina Allen of the internationally acclaimed
Ballymaloe Cookery School, Shanagarry.
The guide has an interesting foreword by food historian
Regina Sexton - who declares that West Cork is truly "a place
apart" when it comes to cuisine - and recipes created by
chef Rory Morahan. The high quality, beautifully illustrated and
easy-to-use 50 page spiral booklet features nine menus comprising
the finest of natural produce form West Cork, six soups and no
fewer than 14 wholesome pub grub suggestions for caterers. There
are also useful tips on supplementary recipes such as stocks,
dressings, breads and desserts, a list of all the producers, where
to shop.
Based mainly on single portions, the booklet is
primarily aimed at the restaurants, hotels, guesthouses and pubs
but would be equally at home in any household kitchen. Launching
the publication, Darina Allen congratulated West Cork LEADER Co-op
and everyone involved on compiling the guide.

2004 Food and Drink Expo
As the St. Patrick's Day and Cheltenham festivals reached their
climax a dedicated group of our food producers were hard at work
flying the flag for West Cork and Ireland. The Fuchsia group were
the only exhibitors from the Republic of Ireland at what is this
years largest food & drink show in the UK. The show has a strong
regional focus with exhibitions from over twenty of British and
European regions. However, unlike other regional groupings the West
Cork initiative is a brand in the truest sense of the word - membership
is based on adherence to a code of practice that spells out quality
and local produce criteria and members consistently put the region
of origin to the fore in their marketing.
Present at the event were Ivan McCutcheon and Kevin Santry of Fuchsia
Brands with representatives from five food companies: Therese Hurley
& Declan Walsh from Ml Staunton & Sons, Sean Nolan from
Union Hall Smoked Fish, Peader Ó Lionáird from Follain
Teo, John & Elizabeth Dawson from Heron Foods & Des Cronin
from Coolmore Foods.
These five exhibitors represent the commitment to quality and service
that is at the heart of the rapid growth of the Irish premium and
speciality food suppliers to the UK. They produce simple food that
is pure in taste and puts into effect the natural advantages of
its environment and local traditions.
On visiting the event, the Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mr
Joe Walsh TD paid tribute to the West Cork Regional Branding Initiative.
Mr Walsh said that development of a regional brand - the Fuchsia
symbol depicts the natural flora of the West Cork area - has inspired
a sense of place and a can-do attitude. Mr Walsh went on to say
that West Cork Leader Co-operative were to be congratulated for
their commitment to developing the region. They have played an important
role in the social, economic and cultural renaissance in West Cork.
"West Cork has now become synonymous with the development
of high quality goods and services. Through harnessing local natural
resources and promoting a spirit of local enterprise, this initiative
has made a significant contribution to creating wealth and sustaining
jobs in the local economy. This region is home to a large number
of food production enterprises including agricultural co-ops, artisan
producers and farmhouse production enterprises, which have all helped
establish West Cork's reputation as a producer of quality food products.
This in turn has contributed enormously to Ireland's reputation
as the Food Island".
The Minister called on other regional groups to emulate the initiative
that West Cork inspires. "Quality Food production is part of
the personality of a region. It can say a lot about the people,
the place and the values they aspire to. With consumers focusing
more and more on place of origin and methods of production, community
groups should consider whether their particular region can capture
the essence of the area in local food produce and thus contribute
to the sustainable growth of the local economy".
If you would like any further information on the
DVD or would like to purchase one at €25, including postage
and packaging, please contact us at 023 34035 or email
us.
Representing the group, Mrs Jo Calnan, An Garran Coir,
explained the purpose in launching their own website and flyer.
"Our main objective is to get recognition in the domestic market
and, more importantly, for people to see our website".
On launching the project Mr Brian Crowley, MEP congratulated
everyone involved with both the website and the flyer, saying: "Too
often we tend to forget what makes this a great area for people
who want to visit or live here. By developing this website, you
have also linked into local activities, local food producers and
local facilities."
An advertisement on the Retail Affiliate Scheme appeared
in the Southern Star on Saturday February 14th 2004. The advert
included contact details of each in store representative and outlined
the process which stores must undergo to gain membership.
The brochure was produced by the Cork Branch of Irish Hotels Federation
and Cork Visitor and Convention Bureau and supported by West Cork
LEADER Co-op Society, Aer Rianta Cork, Cork Kerry Tourism, and Cork
Chamber of Commerce.
The 2004 Holiday World took place in Kings Hall, Belfast
from 16th - 18th January. The West Cork Regional Branding Initiative
was represented by The Trident Hotel, Kinsale; Actons Hotel, Kinsale
and Inchydoney Island Lodge & Spa.
This year there was a record number of people who
attended the event. Over 32,000 people attended over the 3 days,
which was up 1,000 on last year. The venue was very well located
and the organisation and parking could not be faulted. With 510
exhibitors the venue still had ample room, and the West Cork stand
was ideally located at the main entrance. The stand was much larger
than most of those present which meant that the frontage of the
stand was quite impressive.
There was a lot of interest in the West Cork area.
A number of people were familiar with the area and knew of its charm.
Many had not visited in a long time and were looking at the possibility
of going back.
